Unlimited Miles: Miles Davis at 100 All-Star Jazz Centennial Celebration

jazz

Marking the centennial of Miles Davis's birth, Unlimited Miles brings together an extraordinary all-star lineup to explore the vast musical legacy of jazz's most restless innovator. Under the direction of Grammy-winning pianist John Beasley, this celebration keeps "one foot rooted in the rich legacy of Miles Davis while the other leaps boldly into the future."

Beasley, renowned for his Grammy-winning MONK'estra big band and his work with Miles Davis himself, leads a stellar sextet featuring former SFJAZZ Collective members trumpeter Sean Jones and saxophonist Mark Turner, alongside guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, bassist Ben Williams, and drummer Terreon Gulley. This is a gathering of some of today's most accomplished jazz artists, each bringing their own voice to Davis's revolutionary catalog.

Expect to hear the full spectrum of Davis's chameleonic career through Beasley's special arrangements, covering everything from the cool jazz of the 1950s through the electric fusion experiments of the 1970s and beyond. Beasley's approach mirrors Davis's own philosophy of evolution—never rehashing classics but creating fresh interpretations that reflect contemporary sensibilities while honoring the original spirit.

Jones, the former Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra lead trumpeter, brings his commanding presence and deep knowledge of the tradition. Turner, one of jazz's most intellectual and influential saxophonists, contributes his distinctive tone and innovative improvisational approach. Rosenwinkel adds his harmonically rich, rhythmically free guitar style that seamlessly blends jazz with electronics and modern compositional structures. Williams, the 2009 Thelonious Monk Competition winner, anchors the rhythm section with his blend of post-bop and contemporary influences, while Gulley's versatility across jazz, funk, and Afro-Cuban styles provides the dynamic foundation.

This centennial celebration embodies Davis's own restless genius—his refusal to stand still, his constant push toward new sounds, and his understanding that when culture changes, so must the music. As one observer noted about Davis's lasting influence, "that blending of textures and styles created a unique presence" that continues to propel jazz culture forward today.
