The Isaiah Javier Quartet
Tenor saxophonist Isaiah Javier returns to Bird & Beckett for his third booking, this time leading a stellar quartet featuring pianist Daveed Behroozi, bassist Giulio Xavier Cetto, and drummer Louis Sweatt. This marks another homecoming for the Bay Area native who came out of Heritage High School in Brentwood "burning to play jazz at a high level."
Javier's musical journey reflects serious dedication to the craft. At 17, he immersed himself in jazz at prestigious summer programs including the Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony and Lincoln Center's Summer Jazz Academy before heading to Berklee College of Music. His tenor saxophone work draws from jazz legends spanning Duke Ellington to Wayne Shorter, creating music that's heavily influenced by classical, jazz, electronic, and folk traditions.
The quartet will perform modern jazz and original compositions. Javier's approach aims to "connect in an honest way with the audience," balancing his own compositions with carefully chosen standards. His musical influences create a contemporary sound rooted in post-bop and bebop traditions.
Pianist Dahveed Behroozi brings a expansive musical palette ranging from Bach and Brahms to 20th-century jazz luminaries. The Bay Area-based musician, who studied under Fred Hersch at Manhattan School of Music, approaches improvisation as a form of composition, creating deeply atmospheric and emotionally expressive work.
Bassist Giulio Xavier Cetto seamlessly blends jazz with hip-hop influences drawn from his Venezuelan-Italian heritage and Bay Area roots. A prolific performer who has worked with Grammy-winning artists, he performs regularly across Bay Area venues while teaching at institutions including Stanford Jazz Workshop.
The intimate setting at Bird & Beckett—a bookshop and listening room in Glen Park—provides the perfect acoustic environment for this sophisticated quartet. As one musician noted about performing there, it's "a great listening space for some of the most demanding and fun music."
