Chris McCarthy Quintet ft Takuya Kuroda & Eden Bareket

Part of a four-night residency at Black Cat, pianist Chris McCarthy joins forces with trumpeter Takuya Kuroda and baritone saxophonist Eden Bareket for a collaboration The New York Times calls "equal parts sophisticated and electrifying." Complete with bassist Sam Minaie and drummer Steven Crammer, this quintet brings together three of the most forward-thinking voices in modern jazz.

McCarthy, praised for his "high skill and sensitivity," has established himself as one of New York's most in-demand pianists, known for his genre-blurring approach showcased on albums like Still Time to Quit and Life's a Gig. His music blends progressive jazz sensibilities with post-bop sophistication and imaginative compositional voice. Expect intricate interplay and adventurous harmonies from a pianist who moves seamlessly between intimate accompaniment and bold leadership.

Kuroda, the Kobe-born, Brooklyn-based trumpeter, brings his signature fusion of jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul, and funk to the stage. With eight studio albums including his latest chart-topper Everyday, the former Blue Note artist crafts music that radiates groove and creative energy. His sound is both cool and soulful, blending post-bop with electronica influences for something uniquely contemporary.

Bareket adds the deep, agile voice of baritone saxophone to the mix. The Argentina-born, Israel-raised musician leads his own minimalist trio and is known for his command across the baritone's full range, bringing dark, funky grooves and open exploration to the group's sound.

Together, this quintet creates music described as having "deep rhythms, hypnotic melodies, and exhilarating interplay." Drawing from their recent album Add a Zero, expect sophisticated arrangements that push jazz boundaries while maintaining the groove and accessibility that makes their collaboration so compelling. This residency represents live jazz at its most inspired—genre-defying artistry from musicians who have worked with legends like Jerry Bergonzi, DJ Premier, and José James.
