Anthony Stanco Quintet

Anthony Stanco brings Detroit jazz heritage to the intimate setting of Mr. Tipple's, leading a quintet rooted in hard bop and contemporary jazz. A trumpet virtuoso mentored by Marcus Belgrave and Rodney Whitaker, Stanco emerged from Southeast Michigan's rich musical legacy and has served as a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department's "American Music Abroad" program, performing from South Africa to Indonesia.

Stanco leads with what reviewers describe as a "full and confident tone" and "well-constructed solos that match the mood of the tunes," moving seamlessly between bebop fire, sassy half-valve blues, and plunger work to more sensitive ballad moments. His recent album Stanco's Time on Origin Records showcases his evolving sound, while live recordings capture the energy and "great mood and sense of enjoyment" he brings as a bandleader.

Joining him is Jason Hainsworth, the in-demand saxophonist known for his warm tone and hard-swinging original compositions. Currently Associate Dean at the San Francisco Conservatory's RJAM program, Hainsworth has performed with jazz luminaries including Randy Brecker and Renée Rosnes, bringing his expertise in blues, bebop, and Latin jazz to the front line.

The rhythm section features two accomplished drummers: Alan Jones, the Portland-based musician and educator who founded the Alan Jones Academy of Music, and Rodolfo Zuniga, the Costa Rican-born drummer who has performed with Ira Sullivan, Melissa Aldana, and Benny Golson. Zuniga's experience spans major jazz festivals and includes a Carnegie Hall residency.

Expect a program that draws from bebop traditions while embracing contemporary jazz sensibilities, delivered with the infectious energy and musical camaraderie that Stanco's live performances are known for. At Mr. Tipple's cozy, speakeasy-style room, this quintet promises the kind of up-close jazz experience that made the venue a repeated winner of San Francisco's Best Jazz Club award.
