Anthony Stanco
Trumpeter Anthony Stanco brings Detroit's rich jazz legacy to Mr. Tipple's intimate Hayes Valley setting, joined by an all-star quintet for an evening of contemporary hard bop and bebop. Drawing from deep Detroit roots and mentorships with Marcus Belgrave and Rodney Whitaker, Stanco has emerged as a dynamic performer whose artistry spans cultural diplomacy as a U.S. State Department ambassador and education as an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University.
Stanco's recent album In the Groove: Live at The Alluvion captures his "confident swagger" and ability to make bebop "both serious and joyful, meticulously crafted yet never overbearing." His live performances showcase a full, confident tone and well-constructed solos that move from "bop, sassy half-valve blues and plunger work, to more sensitive moments, all with great technique and flair."
Joining Stanco is saxophonist Jason Hainsworth, known for his warm tone and hard-swinging original compositions. As Associate Dean of the San Francisco Conservatory's Roots, Jazz, and American Music program, Hainsworth brings deep blues, bebop, and Latin jazz influences, having performed with jazz luminaries including Randy Brecker and Renée Rosnes.
The rhythm section features drummer Rodolfo Zuniga, whose post-bop and world jazz sensibilities have taken him from Costa Rica to Carnegie Hall, performing with artists like Ira Sullivan and Benny Golson. Veteran drummer Alan Jones rounds out the group, bringing Portland-based expertise in post-bop and hard bop traditions.
Expect music that honors the bebop tradition while speaking in a distinctly contemporary voice — grooves that recall the Blue Note era of the 1960s combined with modern harmonies and textures. Stanco's compositions often draw inspiration from his Detroit heritage and personal experiences, creating "alternate musical worlds" that range from fiery boogaloos to impressionistic ballads with cinematic scope.
