Verve Quintet
The Verve Quintet brings together five accomplished Bay Area jazz musicians to celebrate the effervescent sound of 1960s hard bop in the Blue Note tradition. Led by trumpeter Daniel Herrera and tenor saxophonist Andrew Dixon, whose dynamic pairing creates a unique and exciting front-line sound, the group honors jazz masters like Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Lee Morgan while performing both original compositions and reimagined standards.
Herrera and Dixon's complementary musical styles drive the quintet's approach to hard bop, with Dixon bringing his avant-garde edge developed through studies with NEA Jazz Master David Liebman and international performance experience. The rhythm section features Aaron Germain on bass, whose versatility spans jazz, funk, Latin, and world music through collaborations with luminaries like Yusef Lateef and Randy Brecker. Adam Klipple anchors the group on piano and organ, bringing influences from McCoy Tyner and Cecil Taylor along with his experience performing with Veronica Swift and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Rounding out the quintet is promising young pianist Daniel Herrera and Chicago-based guitarist JPaul Macklin, both rising stars in the modern jazz scene.
Expect the group to shift seamlessly between swing and Latin rhythms, showcasing their polished ensemble sound while leaving space for strong, concise solos from each member. Their repertoire spans from jumping, swinging numbers to spicy, funky explorations, all rooted in the hard bop tradition but infused with contemporary energy and musical sophistication.
