Tony Peebles Quintet
Saxophonist and composer Tony Peebles brings his versatile sound to Mr. Tipple's, leading a quintet that showcases his range across hard bop, contemporary jazz, and Latin influences. Over twenty years, Peebles has built an impressive résumé performing with Grammy Award-winning Pacific Mambo Orchestra, funk legend Fred Wesley from James Brown's band, Karl Denson, and Santana percussionist Karl Perazzo, touring major venues from Monterey to Montreux.
Peebles' saxophone work spans multiple genres with equal fluency — from the groove-heavy funk sessions to the sophisticated harmonic language of modern jazz. His compositions and arrangements draw from his classical training at University of Pennsylvania and jazz studies at University of the Arts, while his teaching role at San Francisco Conservatory of Music keeps him connected to the evolving jazz tradition.
Joining him is trumpeter Erik Jekabson, whose String-tet explores the orchestral textures of Duke Ellington and Gil Evans through chamber jazz arrangements. Jekabson brings a compositional sensibility that bridges classical and jazz worlds, adding rich harmonic layers to the quintet's sound.
The rhythm section features pianist Greg Jacobs, a full-time performer since 2013 who has graced stages at SFJAZZ and Blue Note Napa. His playing draws from the lineage of Art Tatum, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk, incorporating swing, bebop, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban elements. Bassist Josh Thurston-Milgrom brings his compositional approach blending catchy melodies with angular chromaticism, having collaborated with Kurt Rosenwinkel and Chicago jazz luminaries. Drummer Mike Quigg, a California Jazz Conservatory graduate, anchors the group with his contemporary jazz and funk influences.
Expect an evening that moves fluidly between hard-swinging post-bop, Latin rhythms, and contemporary jazz explorations — the kind of musical conversation that emerges when seasoned Bay Area players with diverse backgrounds come together in the intimate setting of Mr. Tipple's recording studio atmosphere.
