The Howell Boys – Richard & Elé & their band
The Bird & Beckett Books and Records stage becomes a family affair as acclaimed Bay Area saxophonist Richard Howell teams up with his son Elé on drums for an intimate performance that spans generations and brings together decades of jazz tradition.
Richard Howell, known for his concept of "Bridge Music," has spent his career weaving together jazz, soul, funk, and global traditions into one cohesive sound. His powerful, melodic saxophone playing has graced recordings and stages with legends like Etta James, Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, Don Cherry, and Charlie Haden. As an educator with Oaktown Jazz Workshops and founder of JazzTree Education, he's dedicated his life to transmitting jazz culture while remaining musically adventurous with his ensemble Sudden Changes.
Elé Howell brings his own remarkable pedigree to the drums. Currently touring with Ravi Coltrane's quartet, he's also worked with Chief Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah and other leading voices in contemporary jazz. As Coltrane notes, "He's a fabulous musician... Just an excellent drummer who plays with a lot of heart and intensity." The young drummer's previous Bird & Beckett performances have showcased his "supple" technique and deep musical understanding, shaped by years of mentorship from Bay Area jazz masters including his father.
The Howell family connection runs deep in Bay Area jazz history. Elé's musical education began early, with piano lessons from Art Khu at age four and years of participation in the Oakland Jazz Workshops under the late Khalil Shaheed. That apprenticeship model continues in their father-son musical relationship — a living example of how jazz tradition passes from one generation to the next.
Expect music that moves fluidly between jazz standards, original compositions, and familiar melodies, delivered with the warmth and groove that Richard's performances are known for. Drawing from their individual experiences while creating something uniquely collaborative, the Howell Boys offer an evening where family bonds and musical heritage converge in the intimate setting of this beloved Glen Park bookstore and jazz venue.
