Joel Behrman Quintet

hard bopswingpost-bopbluescontemporary jazz

Trumpeter Joel Behrman brings his quintet to Mr. Tipple's for a Saturday night set steeped in hard bop tradition and post-bop creativity. Known for his mellifluous tone and elegant compositional voice, Behrman draws from the trumpet lineage of Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, and Freddie Hubbard. His 2012 debut Steppin Back earned praise for its "joy and energy" and established him as a talent who understands that in jazz, "the fundamental things apply: swing, the blues, connecting with the audience."

Behrman studied at the University of Miami with Ira Sullivan and Barry Reis, and has performed with Jimmy Cobb, Chris Potter, Sheila E., and Pete Escovedo. He's also a fixture in the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra and has toured with Phillip Phillips and Boz Scaggs.

Joining him: alto saxophonist Jesse Levit, who leads Levitation Music and holds an M.M. from Manhattan School of Music; drummer Shawn Myers, who specializes in jazz and Haitian drumming traditions and has performed with Grammy-winner Leyla McCalla; pianist Michael Potter; and bassist Isaac Coyle, a 2023 Berklee graduate and frequent collaborator with Terri Lyne Carrington's Grammy-winning New Standards band.

Expect a program of Behrman originals alongside jazz standards — music that swings hard, honors the blues, and showcases the synchronicity of a well-matched ensemble. Behrman's arrangements are tight, his band plays with formidable skill, and the whole experience reflects what one reviewer called "class and fire."
