Frank Catalano's Miles and Coltrane Centennial Celebration

Jazz saxophonist Frank Catalano brings his signature fusion of hard bop, contemporary jazz, and funk to Black Cat for a four-night residency honoring two titans of the genre. This special celebration marks both the anniversary of his #1 charting album Love Supreme Collective and the 100th birthdays of John Coltrane and Miles Davis.

Catalano's robust, crying tenor saxophone sound draws clear influence from Coltrane while channeling the Chicago legacy of Von Freeman, with whom he first played "Bye Bye Blackbird" at age 11. His approach combines the driving modal jazz of the Coltrane tradition with surprising versatility — from Eddie Harris soul-jazz classics to reimagined Joy Division covers. On stage, Catalano is known for his "exuberant, elbows-out" energy and "sunnily ferocious" delivery, building sets to explosive group shout choruses rather than traditional trading.

The program will feature classics from both Davis and Coltrane catalogs alongside tracks from Catalano's new Billboard #1 album Set Me Free and beloved tunes from his collaborations with Tony Bennett. Expect a few surprises as well — Catalano has performed with everyone from The Smashing Pumpkins and Beyoncé to John Legend, bringing an eclectic sensibility to his jazz foundation.

A constant presence at venues from New York's Birdland to stages across Europe and Asia, Catalano has overcome significant adversity (including a 1994 accident that cost him his right middle finger) to become one of the most in-demand saxophonists today, averaging 150 concerts annually. His recent collaboration "Tokyo #9" with Jimmy Chamberlin debuted at #1 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Charts, cementing his reputation as an artist who grasps "the spirit of the thing rather than just the notes."

With multiple shows each night, this residency offers an intimate opportunity to experience Catalano's passionate tribute to jazz's greatest innovators while celebrating his own chart-topping achievements.
