Verve Quintet
The Verve Quintet celebrates the effervescent sound of 1960s hard bop, channeling the sophisticated swing and driving rhythms that made the Blue Note label legendary. Led by trumpeter Daniel Herrera and tenor saxophonist Andrew Dixon, the group honors jazz masters like Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, and Lee Morgan while showcasing their own original compositions.
Herrera and Dixon form a powerful front line, their dynamic pairing creating what The Dawn Club describes as "a unique and exciting sound" through their complementary musical styles. Dixon brings an avant-garde edge developed through studies with NEA Jazz Master David Liebman and international performance experience, while Herrera contributes the melodic sensibility that balances the quintet's approach.
The rhythm section features pianist Adam Klipple, who draws from McCoy Tyner and Cecil Taylor while bringing experience from performances with Veronica Swift and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Bassist Aaron Germain anchors the group with versatility honed through collaborations with luminaries like Yusef Lateef and Randy Brecker, spanning jazz, funk, Latin, and world music. Drummer JPaul Macklin completes the classic hard bop instrumentation, providing the propulsive energy that drives the ensemble.
Expect the quintet to shift seamlessly between swing and Latin rhythms, delivering the spirited improvisation, complex harmonies, and irresistible groove that defined the golden age of jazz. The group has become a fixture at Bay Area venues with regular appearances at both Local Edition and The Dawn Club, establishing themselves as what The Dawn Club calls "The Bay Area's hottest new jazz ensemble."
