Tony Johnson Quartet

Drummer Tony Johnson's residency continues with his quartet featuring Bob Kenmotsu on tenor saxophone, Keith Saunders on piano and Eric Markowitz on bass.

Tony Johnson is a veteran drummer and cornerstone of the San Francisco jazz scene since 1959. A master of swing and bebop, he has recorded with legendary artists including Pony Poindexter, Earl Hines, and Peggy Lee, and leads a monthly quartet at Bird & Beckett Books & Records with saxophonist Bob Kenmotsu, pianist Keith Saunders, and bassist Eric Markowitz.

Jazz saxophonist and composer born in Stockton, California, Bob Kenmotsu is a tenor saxophonist who has performed with notable artists including Jack McDuff, Ruth Brown, and Pat Martino. After relocating to New York and later spending three years in Japan on a cultural exchange fellowship, he returned to the San Francisco Bay Area where he continues to perform and record.

Pianist Keith Saunders is a versatile jazz musician who studied with Charlie Shoemake and Horace Silver in Los Angeles before establishing himself in New York City, where he led The NY HardBop Quintet and recorded multiple albums for the TCB label. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, he has become active in the local jazz scene while also teaching jazz improvisation to students of all levels.

Eric Markowitz is a jazz bassist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. After spending ten years as a top bassist in the St. Louis jazz scene, he relocated to the Bay Area in 2003 where he has established himself as a first-call bassist, performing regularly with local musicians and jazz legends who visit the region.
