Tiffany Austin: Sweet Swing

soulswing

Bay Area jazz vocalist Tiffany Austin brings her signature blend of jazz, swing, blues, and R&B to Keys Jazz Bistro for "Sweet Swing." A Berkeley Law graduate who chose music over legal practice, Austin has established herself as one of Northern California's fastest-rising jazz stars with a tradition-rooted yet thoroughly modern style.

Drawing from influences like Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and Aretha Franklin, Austin infuses classic songs with her own soulful interpretations that are precise, intelligent, and emotionally resonant. Her arrangements span from classic swing to contemporary R&B, while her vocal delivery can shift from sweet to dusky to raspy, creating the impression of multiple singers in one performer.

Austin's stage presence combines gospel fervor with a pop singer's directness and an improviser's instinct to personalize melodies. Her performances feature dynamic storytelling through song, as demonstrated in her SFJAZZ Family Matinee where she guided audiences on "adventures to other places through song." Critics have praised her "clarity of tone and delivery" (DownBeat) and called her "a singer to keep an ear on" (NPR).

The vocalist has shared stages with luminaries including Pharoah Sanders, Roy Ayers, John Handy, and Cyrus Chestnut, performing at venues from Birdland and Dizzy's Den in NYC to Walt Disney Concert Hall and the SFJAZZ Center. Her acclaimed 2015 debut Nothing But Soul showcased her interpretations of Hoagy Carmichael classics, while her Louisiana Creole heritage and diverse musical background inform her soul-steeped approach to jazz standards.

Expected to be joined by her regular collaborators including pianist Adam Shulman, bassist Ron Belcher, and drummer Deszon Claiborne, Austin delivers performances that blend technical precision with emotional depth. Her previous "Swing & Soul" shows at Keys have featured jazz, soul, and funk classics, promising an evening of both familiar standards and unexpected interpretations.
