The Sheldon Alexander Quintet

Drummer Sheldon Alexander brings his "passel of original tunes" and a carefully assembled quintet to Bird & Beckett's intimate listening room. A California Jazz Conservatory graduate who merges jazz, soul, gospel, R&B, and funk into his distinctive Afro-rooted sound, Alexander has become a sought-after sideman across the Bay Area while developing his own compelling original material.

Alexander leads from the kit with a deep understanding of groove and spiritual authenticity — skills honed through early musical experiences at his great uncle's Oakland church and refined through mentorship with jazz luminaries like Gerald Cleaver. His versatility shines whether he's laying down complex rhythms for groups like The Headmasters and The Vaughn Cannon Quartet or exploring the storytelling possibilities of composition and improvisation.

The quintet features Kelyn Crapp on guitar, Nico Colucci on tenor saxophone, Morgan Harrison on piano, and Alan Jones on bass — a "top-flight combo" that reflects Alexander's ability to assemble musicians who can navigate both his original compositions and creative interpretations of standards. Bird & Beckett describes this as music from "a young, but by now solidly established & brilliant star in the Bay Area jazz firmament."

Expect an evening that bridges traditional jazz sensibilities with contemporary innovation, where the leader's compositional voice takes center stage alongside the spontaneous interplay of five accomplished improvisers. Alexander's approach honors the soul and cultural context of the music while pushing it forward — what Bird & Beckett calls "tomorrow's jazz tonight."
