The Humidors

jazzfunkrock

Get ready for a full-on funk experience with The Humidors, the Bay Area's eight-piece groove powerhouse that's been "spreading the Gospel of Funk to dance floors everywhere" for over a decade. This Oakland-based band combines hard-hitting funk, greasy soul, vintage R&B, and soul jazz into what critics call "an infectious polyrhythmic stew."

Led by the soulful vocals of Tori Roze, The Humidors feature some of the Bay Area's finest musicians creating a sound that pulls from old-school and modern influences while staying rooted in ego-less, ensemble-oriented playing. Expect bursts and washes of Hammond B3 organ from Stevie Utstein, punchy horn sections from Patrick Cress (baritone sax) and Scott Okamoto (trombone), burning guitar leads from Mike Mulqueen, thumping bass from Rudo Kinard, driving drums from Adam Willis, and infectious percussion from Justin Abee.

The band has shared stages with funk legends like Dumpstaphunk, The New Mastersounds, The Meters' Leo Nocentelli, Shuggie Otis, and the late Bernie Worrell. Their live performances are where they truly shine — as one reviewer noted, "The Humidors are in their element and absolutely rage on stage." Their tight arrangements feature thoughtful transitions and syncopated rhythms that keep dancers moving while showcasing each member's considerable chops.

This Mr. Tipple's show promises to be something special, featuring an impressive supporting lineup that includes avant-garde saxophonist Patrick Cress (who's also in The Humidors), known for his work in free jazz and electronic improvisation with his ensemble Telepathy. The eclectic bill rounds out with artists spanning everything from baroque pop (Tori Rose) to ambient electronics (Scott Okamoto), creating an evening that explores the full spectrum of contemporary music.

Whether you're drawn to the vintage Tower of Power-style funk, the soulful vocals, or the band's reputation for getting every venue turned into a sweaty dance party, this is your chance to experience one of the West Coast's premier funk and soul acts in the intimate setting of Mr. Tipple's.
