Tammy Hall Trio

Pianist Tammy Hall brings her improvisational style to Mr. Tipple's with a trio featuring bassist Kevin Goldberg. Hall is a Grammy-winning composer and one of the Bay Area's most sought-after musicians, known for her work spanning jazz, gospel, classical, and R&B. Her playing blends elegance and grit — what Houston Person described as "one mighty soulful lady" — drawing on influences from Nina Simone and Mary Lou Williams to Thelonious Monk and Ahmad Jamal.

Hall's career has taken her from playing gospel in Dallas churches to Brussels jazz clubs to stages around the world. She's accompanied legends like Etta Jones and Kim Nalley, served as musical director for theater productions, and won a Grammy for her work on Falu Shah's children's album A Colorful World. Her solo work includes the two-hour improvised piece Heart Flow, which fuses all the varied notes of her musical life.

On stage, Hall is known for her "supremely soulful" playing with a fierce left hand, an uncluttered style marked by conservatory training and deep gospel roots. Her improvisations are deeply emotional — one reviewer noted her Sunday Morning Gospel set at Monterey Jazz Festival "filled the outdoor Garden Stage to capacity. We had church that morning."

Goldberg is a bassist and multi-instrumentalist who has performed with artists including Thomas Mapfumo, José James, and Tank & the Bangas. His work spans jazz, soul, and fusion, and he's committed to creating social change through musical collaboration.

Expect an evening of improvisation that draws from the full spectrum of Black musical traditions, where gospel fervor meets jazz sophistication and the boundaries between genres dissolve. As Hall puts it, she wants audiences "to hear my music and feel good, or just feel, period."
