Smith Dobson Quartet
Multi-instrumentalist Smith Dobson V brings his acclaimed quartet to The Dawn Club, showcasing the diverse talents that have made him a cornerstone of Bay Area jazz for nearly two decades. A master of saxophone, vibraphone, and drums, Dobson carries forward a remarkable musical legacy — his late father, Smith Dobson IV, was a renowned pianist who directed the influential Jazz Series at Garden City in San Jose for over twenty years, accompanying legends like Art Pepper, Bobby Hutcherson, and Chet Baker.
Trained by legendary drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath, who called him "my most talented student," Dobson has collaborated with jazz luminaries including Bobby Hutcherson, Red Rodney, John Handy, and Sheila Jordan. His quartet — typically featuring Keith Saunders on piano, Eric Markowitz on bass, and Tony Johnson on drums — held court for nearly a decade at the now-defunct Club Deluxe, developing a deep musical chemistry that shines through their interpretations of Great American Songbook standards, bebop classics, and original compositions.
Whether leading on tenor saxophone or switching to vibraphone for those burnished Milt Jackson-inspired tones, Dobson brings both technical mastery and deep jazz knowledge to every performance. The quartet's repertoire spans Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk to Cole Porter and Harold Arlen, delivered with the sophisticated interplay that comes from years of regular collaboration.
The Dawn Club's intimate basement setting in the historic Native Sons building provides the perfect backdrop for this level of artistry, with its art deco touches and vintage 1930s atmosphere creating an authentic jazz club experience. The venue's 125-person capacity and mostly seated arrangement ensures every listener can fully appreciate the nuanced musical conversations between these seasoned players.
