Sami Stevens' Homecoming

vocal jazzjazz-influencedsoulfolkneo-soul

Singer-songwriter Sami Stevens brings her intimate, jazz-influenced sound to Black Cat for a homecoming show. Working from piano and Wurlitzer, Stevens crafts original compositions that blend jazz, soul, and folk with what Glide Magazine calls "heaven-sent vocals" and a gift for melody that can "evoke visceral reactions by simply singing a note."

After two years touring with Norah Jones as keyboardist and background vocalist on the Visions tour, Stevens returns to showcase material from her 2023 debut solo album Morning (Sunnyside Records). The album reveals a songwriter with a literary sensibility—what one critic described as "empathic pieces of poetry"—exploring homesickness, longing, and the full spectrum of human emotion. Glide Magazine noted that Stevens "quickly established herself as one of the most promising songwriters to appear in the past few years," praising her "lush, full-bodied voice" reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan paired with "the lyrical compassion of Joni Mitchell."

In live performance, Stevens demonstrates remarkable vocal range and dynamic control, creating what reviewers call "a musical world based in silence"—intimate solo moments where she takes complete control of the stage, balanced with ensemble passages featuring her jazz training. A New England Conservatory graduate in Vocal Jazz Performance, she's also a frequent collaborator with saxophonist Kazemde George and has contributed to projects with Kenny Wollesen, John Zorn, Jesse Harris, and others.

Expect warm, storytelling performances steeped in the lineage of great American singer-songwriters of the '60s and '70s, with Stevens' arrangements moving between folk intimacy and what one writer called "criminally smooth jazz orchestrations." Her songwriting examines the gray spaces of life with both vulnerability and relatability—complex emotional terrain rendered with painterly impressions and compassion.
