Patrick Wolff Quartet
Patrick Wolff brings his saxophone and clarinet mastery to The Dawn Club for what he describes as "a fun gig with a smoking organ trio" in "a beautiful venue with some serious SF Jazz history credentials." Joining Wolff are organist Adam Shulman and drummer Miles Turk, forming what the saxophonist calls "a top shelf band of swinging cats."
Wolff has deep roots in both the New York and San Francisco jazz scenes, having performed and recorded with jazz legends including Albert "Tootie" Heath, Matt Wilson, Grant Stewart, and Louis Moholo-Moholo. His playing is characterized by a focus on lyricism and an embrace of the whole lineage of jazz styles, from bebop through hard bop and beyond. As a composer and bandleader, he's released six albums featuring both his original compositions and explorations of classic jazz repertoire.
Beyond straight-ahead jazz, Wolff has ventured into eclectic musical territory, including stints with West African pop/funk group Asiko and prog metal band Kayo Dot. This musical adventurousness informs his approach to the organ trio format, where the interplay between Hammond B-3, saxophone, and drums creates opportunities for both swinging grooves and more exploratory moments.
Wolff is also a dedicated jazz educator, teaching at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and College of San Mateo, and formerly serving as Faculty Director at the Stanford Jazz Workshop. His deep knowledge of jazz history and repertoire surfaces in his live performances, where he often explores overlooked gems from the bebop and hard bop eras.
The organ trio setting at The Dawn Club promises an intimate evening of creative acoustic jazz, with the venue's storied history providing the perfect backdrop for Wolff's lyrical saxophone work and the trio's swinging interplay. Expect a blend of classic jazz standards, lesser-known compositions, and perhaps some of Wolff's original material, all delivered with the musicianship and passion that has made him a fixture on the Bay Area jazz scene since 2009.
