Larry Vuckovich All-Stars: 100th Anniversary of Miles Davis & John Coltrane

Yugoslavian-born pianist Larry Vuckovich assembles an all-star ensemble to commemorate the 100th anniversary of two jazz titans whose revolutionary music shaped the bebop, hard bop, and post-bop eras. As Vuckovich notes, Miles Davis was unique among the giants in being "active in all 3" of these transformative genres, from his early days with Charlie Parker through the mid-1960s.

The evening features 18-year-old trumpet phenomenon Skylar Tang, who despite her youth displays remarkable maturity on her instrument. She's joined by veteran New York saxophonist Steve Heckman, a multi-instrumentalist deeply influenced by John Coltrane who brings an authentic East Coast feel to his tenor and soprano work. Together they form a powerful front line in the tradition of legendary two-horn combinations.

The rhythm section anchors the tribute with Vuckovich's six decades of experience across bebop, world music fusion, and blues. Praised by Barry Harris as "one of the premier West Coast pianists," he's performed with Dexter Gordon, Jon Hendricks, and Bobby Hutcherson. Puerto Rican percussionist Hector Lugo adds Afro-Caribbean rhythms and vocals, while bassist Doug Miller and drummer Jason Lewis complete the driving ensemble.

A special highlight comes from Grammy Award-winning vocalist Jamie Davis, whose powerful bass-baritone voice brings sophistication to classics from the landmark John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman recording. Davis, who gained prominence as lead vocalist for the Count Basie Orchestra, is known for his elegant phrasing and emotional depth with jazz standards.

Expect swinging bebop interpretations, modal explorations, and the kind of hard-driving ensemble playing that recalls the golden age of small group jazz. Vuckovich's versatility spans from traditional jazz to Latin salsa to Balkan influences, promising a program that honors these masters while showcasing the diverse musical voices of today's Bay Area scene.
