KEV Choice Ensemble
Genre-blending pianist, MC, producer, and composer Kev Choice brings his powerhouse Ensemble to Yoshi's Oakland for a special Black Music Month celebration, weaving together hip-hop, jazz, soul, classical, and Oakland vibes into one electrifying experience. A classically-trained virtuoso who seamlessly handles dual roles of pianist and emcee with remarkable skill, Choice has built his reputation through collaborations with Lauryn Hill (as music director), Ledisi, Michael Franti, Too $hort, and E-40, including serving as Co-Musical Director for E-40's NPR Tiny Desk performance.
The Kev Choice Ensemble features an all-star collective with a powerhouse rhythm section, lush strings, horn section, and standout guest vocalists representing some of the Bay Area's most exciting emerging talent. Choice's live performances are known for their high-energy, emotionally resonant delivery that moves effortlessly between improvisation, orchestration, and groove-driven storytelling. His concerts feel like getting two shows for the price of one — a conscious hip-hop throwdown paired with a memorable jazz-funk-soul experience.
This performance celebrates new music while honoring Black Music Month, drawing inspiration from legends like Stevie Wonder and A Tribe Called Quest. Choice's catalog includes acclaimed releases Oakland Riviera, Love & Revolution, 88 Steps to Eternity, and Social Distancing, with compositions that have been performed by both the Oakland Symphony and San Francisco Symphony. His music reflects deep commitment to groove, composition, and innovation, often blending live instrumentation with modern production.
Expected are dynamic performances that journey from intimate musical moments to full, high-energy ensemble explosions — moving from bebop to hip-hop, soul to hyphy. Choice's socially-conscious lyrics eschew materialism for uplifting messages rooted in love, liberation, creativity, and community. With backing vocals from frequent collaborators and surprise special guests that make no two shows ever the same, audiences can expect next-level musicianship, powerful messages, and the unmistakable spirit of Oakland in what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of culture and inspiration.
