Keith Saunders Trio
Pianist Keith Saunders brings his trio to Keys Jazz Bistro's intimate listening room for an evening of hard bop and straight-ahead jazz. Saunders studied with bebop legends Charlie Shoemake and Horace Silver before spending a quarter-century in New York City, where he co-led the NY HardBop Quintet for eight years, touring extensively and recording four albums for the TCB Montreux Jazz label — two of them produced by Rudy Van Gelder. His playing flows from deep homage to Bud Powell while incorporating the harmonic sophistication and rhythmic drive he absorbed from mentors like Horace Silver.
Saunders has worked with an impressive roster of jazz masters including Eddie Harris, Hank Crawford, Frank Wess, and Mickey Roker. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, he's become a fixture in the local scene, collaborating with Calvin Keys, Patrick Wolff, and Erik Jekabson. His trio performances showcase the conversational interplay and intimate dynamics that four-night residencies at venues like Keys allow musicians to develop.
At Keys Jazz Bistro, you'll experience the music from remarkably close quarters in the 90-seat listening room. As one regular describes it, "You can get a really good look at the faces of the musicians, and you can hear them talk to each other." The venue's warm acoustics, anchored by a Yamaha grand piano, create an atmosphere where "you're not sitting in a row of audience chairs with your hands in your lap" — you feel part of the music itself.
The intimate setting at Keys has drawn musicians and fans who appreciate the North Beach venue's reverent approach to jazz. With its supper club ambiance and first-come, first-served seating, the room welcomes everyone from conservatory students in sneakers to date-night couples dressed to the nines.
