Jazz Mafia's Realistic Orchestra

orchestra

Jazz Mafia's Realistic Orchestra brings their 18-piece electro-acoustic big band sound to the intimate confines of Keys Jazz Bistro. Formed in 2004 by drummer/composer Eric Garland and Jazz Mafia co-founder Adam Theis, this modern orchestra blends classic big band instrumentation with futuristic textures, original compositions, and electronic elements.

Born from the legendary "Jazz Mafia Tuesdays" residency in San Francisco, Realistic Orchestra spent years premiering new works every week, developing a unique sound that sits somewhere between jazz orchestra, film score, electronic music, underground hip-hop session, and experimental theater pit. Their music seamlessly fuses jazz, funk, rock, and electronic beats, creating what critics have called "a unique fusion of electronic jazz, hip-hop beats and live drum 'n' bass."

The ensemble's instrumentation includes the full jazz orchestra setup enhanced with electronic devices, loops, and turntables. Core members Adam Theis (7-string bass, trombone, didgeridoo) and Eric Garland (drums) lead a rotating cast of Bay Area's top musicians across horns, rhythm section, and electronics. The group frequently collaborates with rappers and vocalists, and has created custom productions, film scores, and festival performances across North America.

Expect an adventurous musical journey that swings hard while pushing boundaries. Their performances are known for sophisticated arrangements, brilliant improvisations, and "jaw-dropping talent" that isn't afraid to be used. The intimate setting at Keys Jazz Bistro will create an especially intense experience—18 musicians in close quarters channeling the same experimental spirit that made their weekly residency legendary.

With albums including Across The Street, Symphonies From Down The Block, and Live In San Francisco, Realistic Orchestra continues to evolve the big band tradition for the 21st century, creating music that's both technically masterful and irresistibly groovy.
