Innuendo

world musicfrench

Innuendo presents French popular songs spanning multiple decades in an intimate setting perfect for discovering musical treasures from across the Atlantic. This quartet brings together Big Lou on accordion, Kit Robberson on viola da gamba, David Golia on guitar, and bassist Bing Nathan, who has performed with notable acts including Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers and the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra.

The ensemble explores the rich tradition of French chanson and popular music, from classic café songs to beloved standards that have captivated audiences for generations. The accordion-led arrangements create an authentic European atmosphere, while the unusual combination of viola da gamba with guitar and bass adds a distinctive chamber music quality to the repertoire.

Bing Nathan brings extensive experience across jazz, folk, and Americana to the group's rhythm section. His work with swing acts like The Saddle Cats and jazz ensembles including Notes From The Underground adds depth to the group's interpretations of French material.

Bird & Beckett's intimate bookstore setting, where jazz has been a weekly tradition since 2002, provides the perfect backdrop for this cultural journey. The venue's cozy atmosphere among the stacks creates an ideal environment for experiencing the romantic and nostalgic qualities of French popular music, from café songs to cabaret classics.
