Harvey Wainapel "Organization"

organ combopost-boplatin jazzjazz fusion

Saxophonist and clarinetist Harvey Wainapel brings his "Organization" to Keys Jazz Bistro with a program that ventures beyond the typical organ combo repertoire. This performance will explore compositions by modern jazz masters Frank Foster, Clifford Jordan, Wayne Shorter, Tom Harrell, and Andrew Hill — a compelling showcase of post-bop sophistication.

Wainapel is a versatile reed player who moves fluidly between jazz traditions and Brazilian music. His jazz credentials include performances with piano legends McCoy Tyner and Kenny Barron, tenor great Joe Henderson, and touring internationally with Ray Charles, Joe Lovano, and Brazilian icons Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. He's recorded acclaimed albums including The Hang, which earned four stars from DownBeat, and Amigos Brasileiros vol. 2, praised for its "adventurous and diverse" approach.

What sets Wainapel apart is his deep immersion in Brazilian music — he's visited Brazil over twenty times, each stay lasting at least a month, collaborating with luminaries like guitarist Paulo Bellinati and pianist Amilton Godoy. As Brazilian composer Ivan Lins notes, "Harvey understands Brazilian music in a way that's very unusual; he's got the spirit, he's a great musician!"

Reviews consistently highlight Wainapel's compelling stage presence. The L.A. Jazz Scene noted "a standing ovation for what was two sets of intricately conceived and played compositions," while Rio's O Globo praised his "incredible intimacy with the language of Brazilian music and great stage presence." Joe Lovano describes his "soulful interpretations" and "performance attitude" that embodies what jazz improvisation is about.

The "Organization" format allows Wainapel to stretch beyond conventional boundaries, drawing from his extensive repertoire while showcasing his ability to navigate complex harmonic territory with both technical precision and emotional depth.
