Greg Jacobs Quartet
Oakland pianist Greg Jacobs brings his quartet to Mr. Tipple's intimate Hayes Valley jazz club, featuring Mike Olmos on trumpet, Mike Quigg on drums, and Sam Bevan on double bass. The evening showcases Jacobs' distinctive approach to jazz piano, drawing from influences including Art Tatum, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk while weaving together swing, bebop, hard bop, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban styles.
Since turning professional in 2013, Jacobs has become a fixture in the Bay Area's premier jazz venues, from SF JAZZ and Blue Note Napa to major festivals including Monterey Jazz Festival and Fillmore Jazz Festival. His quartet's repertoire spans the Great American Songbook standards alongside original compositions, emphasizing what Jacobs describes as "musical artwork" where the musicians communicate and trust one another while improvising.
Mr. Tipple's provides the perfect setting for this collaboration — the club's speakeasy-style atmosphere evokes a 1950s New York basement, dark and cozy with craft cocktails flowing alongside the music. The intimate 75-capacity room allows audiences to experience the quartet's interplay up close, from Jacobs' modal jazz explorations to the ensemble's venture into Latin rhythms and post-bop territory. With its $20 minimum spend and no cover charge, the venue attracts both jazz aficionados and theater-goers from the nearby Civic Center performing arts corridor.
