Charles Unger Experience
Saxophonist Charles Unger brings his exuberant style and infectious joy to Mr. Tipple's on July 3rd, backed by pianist Sue Crossman, bassist Joe Nemzer, and drummer Tony "Steamroller" Coleman. A major force in the Bay Area jazz scene for over 40 years, Unger seamlessly blends jazz, R&B, soul, and world beat influences into a sound that's both sophisticated and groove-driven.
Influenced by Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, and Charlie Parker, Unger plays alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones with what The New Fillmore describes as a rich tone and remarkable ease. His performances incorporate Latin grooves and Middle Eastern undercurrents that create what one reviewer called "a melancholy feel so sensuous a person can't help but be moved." Expect to hear music that swings hard while drawing from a range of influences — from straight-ahead jazz to R&B honking tenor in the Albert King tradition.
Unger's stage presence is as memorable as his sound. Known for bringing "an undeniable sense of joy to his performances, with a smile that welcomes even the most recalcitrant listeners to the party," he approaches music as what he calls "a catalyst for bringing different people together and breaking down barriers." As Beyond Chron and edocsmith note, his shows are unforgettable experiences that work for both the uninitiated and the aficionado.
Coleman, who spent over a decade as drummer for blues legend Albert King and has worked with Etta James, Bobby Bland, and B.B. King, brings deep blues and R&B credentials to the rhythm section. Together with Crossman on piano and Nemzer on bass, The Experience delivers music that moves — physically and spiritually. For Unger, music is "a spiritual mission and a quest for a kind of secular redemption," and that sense of purpose comes through in every note.
