Charles Unger Experience

Bay Area jazz veteran Charles Unger brings his signature blend of jazz, funk, soul, and R&B to Mr. Tipple's intimate recording studio setting. A major force in San Francisco jazz for over 40 years, Unger is known for his rich saxophone tone across tenor, alto, and soprano instruments, drawing from influences like Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, and Charlie Parker while incorporating Latin, Middle Eastern, and world beat elements.

Unger's performances are celebrated for their warmth and accessibility — as one reviewer noted, he "brings an undeniable sense of joy to his performances, with a smile that welcomes even the most recalcitrant listeners to the party." His music moves seamlessly through bluesy grooves, funky rhythms, and soulful ballads, creating what critics describe as "consistently danceable yet filled with excellent jazz solos."

Joining Unger for this special evening are pianist Sue Crossman, bassist Joe Nemzer, and drummer Tony "Steamroller" Coleman. Coleman brings impressive credentials from his decade-long collaboration with blues legend Albert King and session work with Etta James, Bobby Bland, and B.B. King. This quartet promises to deliver the kind of groove-based jazz that has made Unger's regular Sunday residencies at venues like Rasselas local institutions.

The Charles Unger Experience represents more than just music — as Unger puts it, he looks at music "as a catalyst for bringing different people together and breaking down barriers." Expect an evening where sophisticated jazz compositions meet infectious rhythms, delivered with the kind of exuberant stage presence and musical joy that has made Unger's performances unforgettable for four decades in the Bay Area scene.
