Bohemia with Grub in West Portal - A Benefit Blow Out for Bird & Beckett
This benefit show brings together the Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project and Proposition Chicken for an eclectic evening of music and poetry on the restaurant's heated outdoor patio. The event supports Bird & Beckett Books & Records, Glen Park's beloved jazz venue and bookstore, with 10% of all dining proceeds going to the nonprofit as part of Proposition Chicken's monthly community giving program.
Junk Drawer, the Belfast quartet headlining the show, has evolved far beyond their early post-punk origins into a cosmic, psychedelic powerhouse. Recent reviews describe their live performances as "mesmerizing, slow-burning journey[s] through hazy, dreamlike soundscapes." Their latest album Days of Heaven finds them crafting what critics call a "blissfully off-kilter musical tour of a 'cosmic Ulster'" that incorporates Krautrock, post-punk, and psychedelia into their signature sound. Live reviewers note their "hypnotic" performances balance "the dreamy allure of 90s shoegaze pioneers like Slowdive" with modern indie sensibilities.
Hank Maninger & the Juke Box Charlies bring decades of Bay Area roots music experience to the stage. Maninger has been a fixture in the local scene since the early 1980s, performing with Bonnie Hayes and the Wild Combo and touring internationally with the Hacienda Brothers. His current band delivers Americana and roots rock with the seasoned musicianship of a veteran who's seen it all.
The Kai Lyons Trio rounds out the musical lineup with contemporary jazz flavored by Cuban and world music traditions. Lyons, a San Francisco-based guitarist and educator, studied at William Paterson University and teaches at Cal State East Bay and the California Jazz Conservatory. His work spans from traditional jazz to Latin influences, having performed with notable musicians including Mike Clark from Herbie Hancock's Original Headhunters.
Between sets, poets curated by the Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project will share their work, creating an intimate literary atmosphere that reflects the bookstore's dual identity as both music venue and literary hub. The evening takes place in the heart of West Portal, surrounded by Bookshop West Portal and The Music Store, with the goal of raising funds to support Bird & Beckett's ambitious schedule of nearly 300 annual events.
