Billie Holiday Project

Stella Heath brings her acclaimed Billie Holiday Project to Freight & Salvage for a special album release concert celebrating her debut recording For Billie. Through thoughtful arrangements and heartfelt storytelling, Heath honors the legendary Lady Day without imitation, treating Holiday's musical language as a pathway to deeper emotional truth.

With her lustrous voice and supple sense of swing, Heath has become one of the Bay Area's most consistently captivating jazz vocalists since emerging in 2014. Her approach to Holiday's repertoire avoids mimicry in favor of genuine homage—borrowing an inflection when it clarifies meaning, but staying true to her own voice when that serves the song better. As one reviewer noted, "Holiday's phrasing is a language, not a magic trick, and Heath treats it that way."

The Billie Holiday Project emerged from Heath's deep collaboration with pianist and arranger Neil Fontano, creating historically anchored performances that illuminate both the beauty and the treacherous emotional terrain Holiday navigated. The band features the cream of the Bay Area swing scene, with crisp arrangements that provide muscular but sensitive support—buoying and caressing Heath's vocals as she moves from the exuberant joy of "Swing, Brother, Swing" to the abject misery of "Good Morning Heartache."

Expect a program mixing Holiday classics like "God Bless the Child" and "Strange Fruit" with carefully chosen contemporary pieces that honor the era's emotional accuracy. Heath enters in period dress with white gardenias in her hair—not as costume drama but as witness to the stories these songs tell. Her performances blend swinging authority with intimate ballad work, creating what audiences describe as an evening where "the history speaks back" through the music.

For Billie, released in May 2026 on Matterhorn Records and supported by a Chamber Music America grant, captures Heath's vision of bringing Holiday's music into the present day while preserving its historical power. This Berkeley show is one of only two official album release concerts, making it a rare opportunity to experience Heath's thoughtful artistry in the intimate setting of Freight & Salvage.
