Jaz Sawyer ft. Steve Nelson

  • SFJAZZ Joe Henderson Lab 201 Franklin Street San Francisco, CA, 94102 United States (map)

Renowned drummer and San Francisco native Jaz Sawyer honors the music and memory of drum master Eddie Marshall with this Hotplate performance focused on Marshall’s 1978 album Dance of the Sun, with guest vibraphonist Steve Nelson recreating parts originally played on the album by the legendary Bobby Hutcherson. This Hotplate show is the first of four celebrating the legacy of Hutcherson and his 40-year association with Marshall, with a truly superb band featuring SFJAZZ Collective pianist Edward Simon, saxophonist James Mahone, and bassist David Ewell.

Jaz possesses an eclectic and refined personal style of drumming that stems from his deep roots in his Classical, Jazz, West-African and Afro-Caribbean musical training. He has worked with many notable artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Abbey Lincoln, George Benson, Bobby Hutcherson, Jacky Terrasson and Dee Dee Bridgewater in some of the world’s premier concert venues, including The Blue Note, The Village Vanguard, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and the Sydney Opera House. Jaz is actively involved in music education in communities within New York, San Francisco Bay Area, New Orleans and Los Angeles.

Veteran vibraphonist Steve Nelson has led a illustrious career as sideman, working with Grant Green, James Spaulding and Kenny Barron and David "Fathead" Newman. He was the vibist of choice among some of his generation's most talented up-and-comers, including Bobby Watson, James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, Donald Brown, Geoffrey Keezer and Lewis Nash. He has an extended association with bass giant Dave Holland, and has recorded a half dozen dates as a leader.

Mr. Sawyer derives maximum melody from percussion.

While Sawyer has a firm grounding in the traditions of jazz, he is willing to explore into and beyond post-bop conventions. The jazz world is taking notice.
