Trumpet virtuoso Theo Croker’s intensely honed mastery of his custom trumpet is intertwined with highly innovative interpretative elements and mind expanding improvisation that shatters all expectations. He is an adventurous musician whose adept skills find him at home playing standards, swinging post-bop, or more groove-oriented electric jazz. Downbeat in awarding a top 4-star rating to Theo’s newest album raved: “Escape Velocity is an amazing album of poise, power and ambition. Croker is an incredibly talented artist we will be listening to for a very long time!” Even though this latest album explores the ranges of jazz crossover sounds (hip hop, rap, funk and electronica), Croker is masterful in his exploration and reinterpretation of classic jazz standards, as well as taking those time-tested techniques and creating new standards of his own from contemporary hits.
Croker’s latest album “Star People Nation!” is “an intimate exploration of the everyday rituals of blackness” – AFROPUNK. The album is a translation of Croker’s personal, spiritual, and creative experience — a self-reflective collection of provocative, powerfully passionate, and boundary busting compositions that speak to our greater shared human existence. This powerful recording — produced and mixed by Grammy-winning and multi-platinum producer/engineer Bob Power (Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, D’Angelo) — is a seamless pairing of the earthly and celestial, a transcendence of sound rooted in it’s multifarious eclecticism. Croker is joined by his exceptional collective which includes Shelwaga Ode (drums), Javier Santiago (keys) and Giulio Xavier (bass).
Croker has toured the world over, even taking up a five month residency at Shanghai’s House of Blues. He’s led the band for Dee Dee Bridgewater’s for five years, and collaborated with incredible musicians such as Irwin Hall, Kassa Overall, Evan Flory-Barnes and Tim Kennedy.
Fun fact: Theo is the grandson of the late great jazz trumpeter Doc Cheatham.
