The longest-lived and most virtuosic organ trios in jazz, the magical combination of guitarist Peter Bernstein, organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart take up residence in the Joe Henderson Lab for a four-night run. The trio will performs material from their new Pirouet album Toy Tunes and material from their deep repertoire that covers scintillating originals and ingeniously re-constructed standards.

Celebrating three decades as a band, they have taken the organ trio tradition popularized by Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff and Larry Young in the 1960s into fresh territory, recording eleven masterly albums under various members’ names or as a collective unit – rotating IDs that clearly show the equality of each member’s contribution to the whole and their individual stature as world-class bandleaders. A trio equally adept at roiling bebop intensity, gentle ballad work and knotty fistfuls of funk, Bernstein, Goldings, and Stewart have been less active in the last few years, owing to the demands of their individual careers, so every new album and tour is cause for celebration. Their latest album on the Pirouet label, Ramshackle Serenade, is their first studio session in 12 years, and is a welcome return for a trio that DownBeat calls “a killer organ trio barrage that’s deep in the pocket.”

An keyboardist whose artistry reaches far beyond jazz, Goldings began his career with the likes of Sarah Vaughan Jim Hall and contributed his singular style to the work of Maceo Parker, Jon Mayer, John Scofield, Norah Jones, and James Taylor. Bernstein is a brilliant guitarist with a deep connection to organists, working with Melvin Rhyne, Sam Yahel, Mike LeDonne, and Dr. Lonnie Smith in addition to a roster of jazz giants including Joshua Redman, Lou Donaldson, and Brad Mehldau. Easily one of the most influential and in-demand drummers of the last 20 years, Stewart has appeared on a staggering number of albums with the likes of Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, and Michael Brecker. For this four-night run, the trio performs material from their new Pirouet album Toy Tunes and material from their deep repertoire that covers scintillating originals and ingeniously re-constructed standards. Equally adept at roiling bebop intensity, gentle ballad work and knotty fistfuls of funk, Bernstein, Goldings, and Stewart have been less active in the last few years owing to the demands of their individual careers, so every new album and performance is cause for celebration.

This is a killer organ trio barrage that’s deep in the pocket. Bernstein, Goldings and Stewart have a natural feel for this music, laying down a groove that lets each soloist float across the tunes.
