Formed by saxophonist Joshua Redman in tribute to his late father, saxophone giant Dewey Redman, this quartet comprising four of the greatest instrumentalists in modern jazz draws inspiration from Old and New Dreams, the iconic 1980s band featuring the elder Redman and fellow Ornette Coleman collaborators Ed Blackwell, Charlie Haden, and Don Cherry. They return to SFJAZZ in celebration of the release of their new Nonesuch album, Still Dreaming.

Selected by Redman and each uniquely qualified to honor the legacy of both Redman and Coleman, the members of Still Dreaming have deep connections to their instrumental counterparts in the Coleman alumni band. Bassist Scott Colley was a student of Haden at Cal Arts, while drummer Brian Blade was born to the same proud New Orleans tradition as Blackwell, and trumpeter Ron Miles counts Cherry as a primary influence. Redman broke into the jazz scene in the early 1990s performing widely with his father, recording two albums with him. But as a bandleader in his own right, he’s followed his own trajectory, rarely intersecting with the gutbucket avant-garde sound that defined Dewey’s aesthetic. Over the course of four albums for ECM and Black Saint, O&ND played brilliantly reimagined versions of Ornette’s music and originals. Still Dreaming boldly expands on this essential legacy with fresh compositions and renewed spirit, creating mesmerizing music for a new century.
