Paris-based jazz pianist and singer Sarah McKenzie is poised to join the rarefied air occupied by superstars Diana Krall and Norah Jones. She performs music from her new Impulse! release, Paris in the Rain.
Balancing a master’s touch on piano with a warm, bright, and inviting vocal approach, McKenzie possesses a singular gift, transporting listeners to a world of sophistication and romance. Building a burgeoning career in the Australian scene, McKenzie earned a full scholarship to Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, and her first three albums for the Australian ABC Music label received ARIA Music Award nominations, with her 2012 release, Close Your Eyes, winning for Best Jazz Album. Her third session, We Could Be Lovers, was picked up by the legendary Impulse! label, and her first album recorded specifically for Impulse!, Paris in the Rain, was released last year. Produced by Brian Bacchus (Gregory Porter, Lizz Wright, Norah Jones), Paris in the Rain is a valentine to McKenzie’s adopted home featuring a rich collection of originals and standards from the likes of Kern, Gershwin, Ellington, and Mancini, backed by a top shelf band including SFJAZZ Collective vibraphonist Warren Wolf and trumpeter Ingrid Jensen. For this night, McKenzie brings a spectacular quartet including guitarist John Storie, bassist Alex Boneham, and drummer Donald Edwards.
