One of the hottest jazz/R&B bands on the planet, Snarky Puppy, fresh from their 2017 GRAMMY win for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, plays with an irresistible mix of funk, fire and finesse. A Brooklyn-based collective that grew out of the celebrated jazz program at the University of North Texas, the band — which features a revolving cast of up to a dozen musicians playing guitars, percussion, horns, keyboards and sometimes strings — makes what it likes to call “music for your brain and booty.”
Led by bassist and composer Michael League, Snarky Puppy plays fresh groove music that smartly balances composition and improvisation, mixing rich jazz harmonies, raw funk and ripping electric guitar. The band's rotating lineup features musicians who also perform with stars like Erykah Badu, Marcus Miller, Justin Timberlake, Roy Hargrove, Snoop Dogg and John Mayer. While touring the world, the band makes a point of giving clinics and master classes for aspiring musicians. Their newest album, Culcha Vulcha, is the band’s first true studio album in eight years, winning a GRAMMY and featuring contributions of over twenty musicians from their constantly revolving lineup. Don’t miss this rollicking evening with the most explosively funky mega-band in the land, mixing deep and soulful grooves with a breathless array of instrumental fireworks.
On Thursday (3/1) and Sunday (3/4), Snarky Puppy welcomes fellow GroundUP Music artists and regular collaborators Banda Magda as their special guests. Founded by the magnetic Greek-born singer, keyboardist, and composer Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda moves from samba to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando. Their songs capture the best of mid-century pop ballads and cinematic arranging, drawing on the band’s global background. Their new album, Tigre, was co-produced by Snarky Puppy leader Michael League and GRAMMY-winner Fab Dupont (Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Bebel Gilberto).
