For this night of duets, the pianist and NEA Jazz Master is joined by violinist Carter, trumpeter Henderson and drummer Carrington — three master musicians with whom Barron has had a long and distinguished history. First recording together in the early 70s, Barron and Henderson share a deep, telepathic connection. A veteran bandleader and sideman, Henderson came to fame with Herbie Hancock and currently performs with the Cookers. A MacArthur “genius grant” recipient, Carter worked with Barron on his 1999 album Spirit Song and her Rhythms of the Heart from the same year. The pair reunited for their exquisite 2001 duet release, Freefall. Playing together in Barron’s trio and with Stan Getz, Barron and Carrington have enjoyed a musical partnership going back to Carrington’s teenage years, when the pianist performed on her first album, TLC and Friends, recorded when the prodigious young drummer was 16.
