San Francisco saxophonist Steven Lugerner continues his explorations of the music of jazz legend Jackie McLean with JACKNIFE, a hard-hitting West Coast post-bop quintet. Exploring tunes from McLeans seminal early- and mid-1960s Blue Note albums, Jacknife brings together a formidable cast of rising talent.
A practitioner of every instrument with a reed in it, from lurking bass clarinet to soaring soprano sax explorations, Steven Lugerner composes music that marries the minimalist sonorities of artists such as John Adams and Phillip Glass to the rich, urban jazz textures of New York composer/bandleaders such as Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck.. His compositions have been described as “a textured, nearly seamless blend of composition and improvisation” by Francis Davis of The Village Voice – while the New York Times calls him “an impeccably trained multi- reedist.”
In a relatively short period of time, the 27-year-old Bay Area native Lugerner has collaborated with a heavyweight roster of jazz masters including, Grammy nominated pianist Fred Hersch, pianists Jason Moran and Myra Melford; drum legends Albert “Tootie” Heath, Matt Wilson, John Hollenbeck and Allison Miller; saxophonists Jane Ira Bloom, Dayna Stephens, Chris Cheek, Anat Cohen and Miguel Zenon; trumpeter Ralph Alessi, flutist Jamie Baum and bassist Todd Sickafoose.
