Trumpeter/composer Erik Jekabson is a versatile performer with formidable jazz improvisation skills who has moved deftly between the worlds of creative improvisation, funk, and pop. The new Erik Jekabson Sextet showcases prolific masters and brilliant improvisers, including percussion great John Santos and well known Bay Area bassist John Witala.
Far more than an essential creative catalyst on the Bay Area jazz scene, Jekabson has played a key role in bringing the region’s deep talent pool into the national spotlight. The founder and driving force behind the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, he’s built a welcoming sonic laboratory that’s inspired a steady flow of new compositions and arrangements from its creatively roiling ranks. But to fully experience Jekabson’s beautifully burnished sound there’s no better vehicle than his all-star sextet.
As an arranger and composer, he’s written for both vocalists (Madeleine Peyroux, Ani DiFranco, Jane Krakowski, Jackie Ryan, Kenny Washington, Madeline Eastman, Kellye Gray, Sandy Cressman, Raz Kennedy, Shanna Carlson) and instrumental ensembles. Erik currently leads his own ensembles, and has brought them to notable venues including Stanford Jazz Workshop, SFJAZZ Center, the California Jazz Conservatory, The Sound Room and the Red Poppy Art House.
