A creative dynamo on the Bay Area music scene, trumpeter Will Magid is a bandleader and mover-and-shaker whose celebratory music brings together a vast and disparate cast of players in the ensemble Alligator Spacewalk. He’s celebrating the release of the new album Lunar Conquest Suite, a body of tunes composed for Alligator Spacewalk by reed expert Teddy Raven.
The piece explores the trials and tribulations of the individuals involved in the epochal 1969 moon landing, and makes canny use of recently released audio samples from the NASA archives. With its orchestral electro-acoustic instrumentation, the ensemble features some of the most versatile and persistently creative musicians on the scene, including trombonist and Jazz Mafia godfather Adam Theis and cellist Lewis Patnzer, best known for his work with the experimental band Judgement Day. And Raven is a rising force who’s been making an outsized impact on the Bay Area scene. A Fulbright scholar who intensively studied the music of Bulgaria, he and Theis co-composed the ambitious Protest Brass suite that premiered at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival in the spring. Lunar Conquest Suitemarks another step in his rapid evolution as a composer, arranger and creative catalyst.
