For their final shows with all original members, the trio performs music that spans material from the group's 17 year existence as a band.

For their final tour with pianist Ethan Iverson, the irreverent band of jazz outlaws return to the Miner stage. A uniquely audacious trio that has crossed into the mainstream to draw jazz fans and rock aficionados alike, the Bad Plus rose to fame over a decade ago by transforming pop and rock anthems like Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and Queen’s “We Are the Champions” into epic improvisational journeys.

Following their 2014 albums dedicated to an interpretation of Igor Stravinsky’s iconic The Rite of Spring and original compositions (Inevitable Western), the band performed a stunning run of shows with saxophonist Joshua Redman in support of 2015’s The Bad Plus Joshua Redman. For their last SFJAZZ appearances in the present configuration, they will revisit classics from their lengthy catalog as well as material from their latest release, It’s Hard, featuring covers of songs by a staggeringly diverse range of artists including Barry Manilow, Johnny Cash, Ornette Coleman, Kraftwerk, Prince, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, and more. Whatever the origins of the tunes they explore, The Bad Plus has developed a singular group concept and sound that makes for a thrilling ride. A band known for radically altering their sets from night to night, The Bad Plus is, in the words of Rolling Stone, “about as badass as highbrow gets.”
