No pianist alive imbues the solo piano format with more explosive virtuosity or thrilling unpredictability than Hiromi Uehara – an artist the AllMusic Guide calls “one of the most remarkable pianists of the past half century.”

A prodigious talent who debuted with the Czech Philharmonic at 14, the Hamamatsu, Japan native was mentored by Chick Corea and Ahmad Jamal early in her development, signing her first record deal with Telarc before graduating from Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Blending a foundation in classical repertoire with a deep feeling for the jazz tradition, she’s recorded ten albums in settings including her original trio, the Sonicbloom quartet, and her most recent Trio Project with bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips. But it is the solo recital that allows Hiromi to follow her creative muse unadorned and explore without restriction – a format memorialized on her superlative 2010 Telarc solo CD, Place to Be. For the other half of the evening, Hiromi will be joined by Colombian harp master Edmar Castañeda, praised by the San Jose Mercury News for his “persuasively syncopated approach drawing on Cuban and Brazilian rhythms, traditional Colombian forms, and jazz harmonies and improvisation.” Hiromi and Castaneda made their duo debut at New York’s Blue Note in 2016. Of the harpist, the pianist said, "The first time I heard Edmar I simply said "WOW!” in awe of his artistry. So now, I would like all of you to hear his music so you can go "WOW!” too."

Playing unaccompanied is perfect for Hiromi; the acoustic solo-piano format gives her plenty of room to explore her creative impulses.
