A pioneer of world music and Indo-jazz fusion, world renowned tabla maestro Zakir Hussain has blazed a mind-boggling array of musical trails. Fresh from being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at SFJAZZ Gala 2017, and described by The New York Times as “a living genius,” Hussain returns with his new project Crosscurrents, exploring the profound intersection of jazz and Indian classical music with some of India’s greatest musicians working within the genre.

Hussain is joined by modern saxophone master Chris Potter and legendary bassist legendary bassist Dave Holland. Guitarist Sanjay Divecha is an acclaimed composer and bandleader best known for his work with vocalist Angelique Kidjo and drummer Dave Weckl, while Darjeeling-born keyboardist and composer Louiz Banks made an international impact with master guitarist John McLaughlin and late producer Bob Belden’s Miles From India project. Since arriving in the Bay Area in 1970 as a celebrated teenage prodigy trained by his legendary father Alla Rakha, Hussain has played an essential role bringing the unsurpassed rhythmic sophistication of North Indian classical music into a diverse array of settings.
