Tony Trischka is an influential five-string banjo player born in Syracuse, New York in 1949, widely recognized as the father of modern bluegrass and a pioneer of progressive bluegrass music. Known for synthesizing bluegrass with jazz, avant-garde, fusion, and other genres, Trischka has released landmark albums including Bluegrass Light (1974) and A Robot Plane Flies Over Arkansas (1983), and has mentored generations of musicians including Béla Fleck. His innovative compositions and genre-bending approach have legitimized experimentation in acoustic music and expanded the artistic possibilities of the banjo.
