Berkeley-born pianist, saxophonist, and drummer Peter Apfelbaum is best known as the founder and leader of the Hieroglyphics Ensemble, a 17-piece avant-garde jazz group formed in 1977. His work blends experimental jazz with world music influences, and he has collaborated with Don Cherry, Carla Bley, and numerous other jazz innovators since beginning his professional career in his early teens.
