Paula West is a San Francisco-based jazz and cabaret singer celebrated for her rich contralto voice, precise phrasing, and sophisticated interpretations of an eclectic repertoire spanning jazz standards, Great American Songbook classics, and unconventional material by composers like Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie. Born in 1959 to a Marine Corps family in San Diego, she discovered jazz during college and moved to San Francisco in the late 1980s, where she gradually built her reputation through performances at premier venues including the Algonquin Hotel's Oak Room in New York and residencies at San Francisco's Empire Plush Room.
