Hannibal Lokumbe (born Marvin Peterson, 1948) is an American jazz trumpeter and composer known for his avant-garde and free jazz approach. A native of Texas who moved to New York in 1970, he became a longtime collaborator with Gil Evans and worked with jazz luminaries including Pharoah Sanders, Elvin Jones, and Roy Haynes. Beyond jazz, he has composed for major orchestras and symphonies, and his groundbreaking opera African Portraits premiered at Carnegie Hall.
