A tenor saxophonist from the San Francisco Bay Area, Dave Ellis came to prominence in the 1990s as a member of guitarist Charlie Hunter's band and for his work with Bob Weir after the Grateful Dead. Known for his mature, gritty saxophone style praised for its "enveloping sound and emphatic attack," Ellis has recorded several albums as a bandleader, including the acclaimed State of Mind (2003) produced by legendary Orrin Keepnews.
