Billy Higgins (1936–2001) was an American jazz drummer renowned as one of the most recorded and respected musicians in jazz history. He helped pioneer free jazz with Ornette Coleman's groundbreaking quartet in the late 1950s and became the unofficial house drummer for Blue Note Records, playing on over 700 recordings with artists ranging from Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane to Herbie Hancock and Cedar Walton. Known for his sensitive accompaniment, precise swing, and dedication to teaching, Higgins co-founded the World Stage arts center in Los Angeles and was honored as a 1997 NEA Jazz Master.
