Billy Childs is a Los Angeles-born composer, jazz pianist, and arranger who has emerged as one of the foremost American composers of his era. Beginning his jazz career in 1977 with J.J. Johnson and later serving as pianist and mentor under Freddie Hubbard, Childs has distinguished himself by successfully synthesizing jazz, classical, chamber, and orchestral music traditions. A six-time Grammy Award winner, he has received major commissions from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony, Kronos Quartet, and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, while maintaining an active recording and performing career.
